Productivity Tips For Writers
One thing that many writers struggle with is making enough time to get everything they need done. Because writing can take such large amounts of time it’s important that you be as productive as possible and make a point of adopting habits that will increase your efficiency as you work. Read on for some helpful tips that writers can use to be more productive and get more writing done each day!
Waking up early is a great way to increase productivity for writers for a lot of different reasons. The most obvious one is that you simply have more time to accomplish things during the day. If you’re up an hour earlier it gives you an extra hour to dedicate to your writing. It’s very common for writers to say that they work best in the early hours of the morning because of how calm and quiet it is and how fresh their minds are. This is also great for a writer that needs to spend their afternoons doing things that involve other people - which must be accomplished during normal business hours. A writer can write any time but phone calls certainly can’t be made at 3am.
Another great reason to wake up early is because it gives your entire day a helpful boost in the way of getting things done. You’re up early so you already feel productive and motivated and this encourages you to get even more done simply because you took the time to make an effort to give yourself a chance of getting more done. Getting up early helps beat laziness and procrastination.
When you wake up early you also put yourself on a different track for the entire day. You are on a different schedule than those that choose to sleep in which means you’re likely to have advantages and be more productive than they are. For example waking up a bit earlier means you can get more of your writing done while the rest of the world is asleep which means less distractions and less of a chance that you’ll be interrupted.
It also keeps you healthier and better rested to wake up early in the morning and contributes to many other successful habits as well. If you wake up earlier you’re more likely to have time to eat breakfast (an important way to begin the day) you’ll be less rushed through your morning routine, and you’ll likely have time to complete extra work during the day which can translate into more money and job security in the long run.
When you wake up early in the morning you’re more likely to maintain a high level of productivity throughout the day as opposed to waking up much later and then getting a lazy or slow start to your day. Waking up early instantly kicks you into a high-performance mode and can ensure that the entirety of your day is a useful and efficient. Waking up earlier can also mean the difference between having the motivation to complete your goals that day or just letting another day slip by without accomplishing much.
Waking up early is one of the first and most efficient productivity habits a person should adopt simply because it effects every aspect of your day and can determine whether or not you form new habits so it’s especially import to implement this tool in your life as quickly as possible as it can set you on the path of becoming more efficient and productive in your daily life.
Another good tip is to be certain that you’re organized. Being organized may seem like the most obvious tip out there but it’s remarkable how many writers skip over this important are of productivity and time management simply because they don’t think it will be enough of an impact to be worth their time. Fortunately it’s never too late to get organized and it can always make a big deal when it comes to being efficient. Your writing can benefit a great deal from getting things cleaned up and organized wherever you write, even if it’s just your laptop or your filed cabinet that needs some work to it. Whatever you do make sure that you dedicate some kind of filing system for projects you are working on and others that you’ve set aside. Little systems like these with just a few labels here and then can be a godsend in the future.
The first step in getting organized is just to clean up and de-clutter. That means throw away any trash, things you don’t use any more, stuff you don’t need or don’t want any more (you may not want your tax documents but you need them so be fair here when you throw things away) and just generally clean up wherever it is that needs it. It’s also important to begin a general process of cleaning up what all you have in your work space and then finding specific places for each things to go. If you can’t find a place for everything you have in your office to go then it’s time to downsize. Be ruthless and only keep things that you use or need in with you. It’s not worth having to dig through stacks of paper or folders to reference a character or to find a random idea you scribbled down. Get clean and get organized - it’s worth the effort in the long run.
If it helps then it’s also useful to use some sort of filing or labeling system that serves your particular working needs in such a way that makes things easier or simplified for you and helps you be more efficient. If you don’t have such a filing system then it might be time to make one that can suit the type of work you do and creates a little more order in your life.
This type of organization can, and should, be applied to every aspect of your life. If you can manage to get your working environment organized it will be that much easier to get other areas of your life organized as well such as your car or your home. If you are able to get all the main areas of your life organized you’ll enjoy greater productivity in not only your writing environment but in all the different aspects of your life. Greater productivity leads to more work and value created which means more income or revenue which can mean more writing published, sold, or noticed and maybe even some fame and prestige for you down the road - now doesn’t that make all the work seem worth it?
These are just a couple of helpful tips for making a writers life a bit more productive and soon we’ll be back with a few more for you writers out there to use in making your writing go a lot smoother and easier.
